Sky Islands of the Coronado National Forest
The Coronado National Forest in southeastern Arizona manages major parts of the Sky Islands north of Mexico. The Forest manages 17 mountain ranges in 12 separate units totaling 1,780,000 acres. Habitats vary from deserts to subalpine forests with the highest point being Mount Graham in the Pinaleno Mountains at 10,724 feet. The high elevation peaks are refuges for plants, animals, and even humans when temperatures in the deserts exceed 100 degrees for weeks on end during the summer.
