Focus on Ecosystem Benefits and Outcomes
Stewardship End Result Contracting helps achieve land management goals while meeting local and rural community needs, including contributing to the sustainability of rural communities and providing a continuing source of local income and employment. It focuses on the “end result” ecosystem benefits and outcomes, rather than on what's removed from the land.
20-Year Stewardship Contracting
The 2018 omnibus budget bill, in Division O, Title II, Sections 204-207, amended the stewardship contracting authority. Section 207 extends the maximum duration of stewardship contracts and agreements in areas where the majority of Federal lands are in Fire Regime Groups I, II, and III up to 20 years and allows the agency to give a procurement preference for innovative use of forest products. In addition, Section 204 gives the agency greater flexibility to manage appropriated funds needed to cover potential contract cancellation costs.
The Forest Service is accepting feedback from stakeholders to inform the development of a strategy for successful use of the new authorities. Provide comments by June 22, 2018, using our “Ask a Question Form”…
