The Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands covers nearly three million acres from western Kansas and Colorado's highest mountain peaks along the Continental Divide. This landscape offers a variety of ecosystems rich in history, geology, scenery, wildlife habitat and recreation opportunities.

Bear Lake and Blue Lake Campgrounds closed - San Carlos Ranger District (UPDATE)

The blown down trees at the Bear and Blue Lake Campgrounds have been removed, but the campgrounds will remain closed until further notice. Personnel are working diligently on making other necessary repairs with a goal of having the campgrounds open this year (2024) in a limited capacity in time for the 4th of July holiday. Fishing access at Blue Lake is available, but there is no vehicle access past the Blue Lake day-use area.

The Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands, located in USDA Forest Service Region 2, recently supported the USDA Forest Service International Programs in Brazil at a five-day sustainable trail and natural resource management workshop April 22-26, 2024 at the Brasilia National Park.

PSICC releases revised proposal for the Integrated Management of Target Shooting

PUEBLO, Colo., Nov. 28, 2023 – The Integrated Management of Target Shooting project alternatives and preliminary environmental effects were released for public input by the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands today. The project, located on the Pike National Forest, addresses the need to provide opportunities for target shooting on National Forest System lands. It identifies areas unsuitable for dispersed target shooting and locations to be developed as shooting ranges. It also establishes an adaptive management framework to manage target shooting in the future.

Highlights

  • Lake George Diversion Dam Removal project
    The South Park Ranger District of the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands, removed the Lake George Dam and will be implementing restoration activities on the South Platte River.
  • The Bear Creek Watershed Restoration Project
    The project protects the greenback cutthroat trout while allowing for appropriate and sustainable recreation in this very popular area.
