Hunting, Fishing and Shooting
Hunting, fishing and shooting opportunities of all kinds can be found on the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands.
Hunting opportunities include small game birds or waterfowl on the grasslands and hunting deer, pronghorn or elk on the forested districts.
Cast your line from the banks or a boat for some great fishing! Fishing opportunities include lake and pond fishing, river and stream fishing and ice fishing.
In general, recreational shooting is allowed on most National Forest System lands. However, discharging a firearm is always prohibited within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area; into or within a cave; across or on a National Forest System road or a nearby body of water or in any manner or place where any person or property is exposed to injury or damage (36 CFR 261.10(d)).

Lake and Pond Fishing
Get your fishing gear ready! Stocked lakes and ponds are abundant on the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands. A current state fishing license is required. Information on seasons, licenses and restrictions is available at Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.
Ice Fishing
Whether you are ice fishing while sitting on a chair in the open or on a stool in a heated fishing shanty, the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands will have an ice fishing experience that is just right for you!
A valid Colorado fishing license is required. Remember to check fishing regulations before fishing at any body of water. River and Stream Fishing

Recreational and Target Shooting

Areas closed to target shooting on the forest include
- Manitou Park along Highway 67 from the Experimental Forest south to the Forest boundary
- Rampart Range Road and Rampart Reservoir area north of Highway 24 from Waldo Canyon north to Woodland Park
- South Platte River in Elevenmile Canyon
- Jefferson Lake Recreation Area
- West and southwest of Colorado Springs along the Old Stage Road and Gold Camp Road
- Monument Fire Center - east of the Mt. Herman summit to the forest boundary
- South Platte River from Deckers downstream to Chatfield State Park
- North Fork of the South Platte River from Buffalo Creek downstream to Chatfield State Park
- Sugar Creek Road from Sprucewood to the South Platte River
- AG Ranch in Shawnee on both sides of Highway 285
