Recreation Opportunities

Forests on Savannah River Site are managed for forest products, wildlife habitat, ecological research, and environmental remediation efforts. Out of concern for public safety and for national security reasons, Savannah River Site and it's forests are closed to the public.

While not actively managed by the Forest Service, the Crackerneck Wildlife Management Area - a 10,000-acre ecological reserve adjacent to Savannah River Site does offer limited recreational opportunities at various times of the year. To download a brochure of the area and to find out dates and times specific recreation activities are permitted visit: https://dnr.sc.gov/gis/docs/24-25CrackerneckBrochure.pdf

Savannah River Site is located within the Central Savannah River Area or CSRA, an area comprised of 21 counties with South Carolina and Georgia. Within the CSRA there is an abundance of year round recreational activities offered by federal, state, and local governments as well as private companies and outfitters to include:

  • Camping (Army Corps of Engineers, state and county parks, private)
  • Biking
  • Hiking
  • Museums
  • Equestrian Trails
  • Minor League baseball (Augusta Green Jackets)
  • Golf (The Masters Tournament)
  • Performing Art Centers
  • Boating (Canoe, power and sail)
  • Nature Walks

What ever your outdoor passions are, you'll for sure find plenty of opportunity for them and possibly make new ones here in the Central Savannah River Area.
