Recreation
The majority of forests on Savannah River Site are restricted property and not open to the public. Limited access is granted to the public at the Crackerneck Wildlife Management Area and Ecological Reserve.
Crackerneck Wildlife Management Area and Ecological Reserve is owned by the U. S Department of Energy and managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). The area is open only during designated dates and times and public access is tightly controlled. The area offers diverse recreational opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking and other non-consumptive uses. - Crackerneck Visitor Registration:
All individuals utilizing Crackerneck are required to sign in at the check station prior to entering the property and sign out before leaving. In addition to entering through the check station gate, individuals are also allowed to access Crackerneck from the Savannah River. These individuals must register before entering the river and return to sign out before leaving. Anyone not following this procedure will be considered trespassing. SCDNR personnel will be present at all times to assist with registration, answer questions, provide maps, etc.
- Prohibited Activities at Crackerneck:
Camping, dirt bikes, and all other uses not previously specified are prohibited on Crackerneck. ATV's are not prohibited, but are confined to the designated road system and no off-road use is permitted.
Forests on Savannah River Site are managed for forest products, wildlife habitat, ecological research, and environmental remediation efforts. Out of concern for public safety and for national security reasons, Savannah River Site and it's forests are closed to the public.
While not actively managed by the Forest Service, the Crackerneck Wildlife Management Area - a 10,000-acre ecological reserve adjacent to Savannah River Site does offer limited recreational opportunities at various times of the year. Savannah River Site is located within the Central Savannah River Area or CSRA, an area comprised of 21 counties with South Carolina and Georgia. Within the CSRA there is an abundance of year round recreational activities offered by federal, state, and local governments as well as private companies and outfitters to include:
- Camping (Army Corps of Engineers, state and county parks, private)
- Biking
- Hiking
- Museums
- Equestrian Trails
- Minor League baseball (Augusta Green Jackets)
- Golf (The Masters Tournament)
- Performing Art Centers
- Boating (Canoe, power and sail)
- Nature Walks
What ever your outdoor passions are, you'll for sure find plenty of opportunity for them and possibly make new ones here in the Central Savannah River Area.
