Firefighting - Job Corps


 

 

All Forest Service Job Corps centers have a wildland fire and/or camp crew and a a Forest Assistant Fire Management Officer. Job Corps wildland fire and camp crews have gained a reputation for fielding disciplined and well-trained crews. At any one time, the program has the capacity to dispatch more than 1,000 Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) qualified Job Corps students nationwide to support wildland fires, all-hazard emergencies, hazardous fuels, and forest health program nationwide.

Wildland Firefighter Type 2

Job Corps students red-carded as Firefighter Type 2s (FFT2) serves on hand crews, engine crews, or helitack crews, performing fire suppression and fuels management duties.

Advanced Fire Management Training Program

Collbran (Colorado), Schenck (North Carolina), or Trapper Creek (Montana) Job Corps centers offer an Advanced Fire Management Training Program (AFMTP) for exceptional students. AFMTP graduates are recruited as new firefighters with public land management agencies to help meet the demands for a skilled, professional, and diverse wildland fire management workforce.

Expanded Dispatch Recorder

The Job Corps Dispatch Academy trains and qualifies a new generation of wildland fire dispatchers. Expanded Dispatch Recorders collect the information needed to dispatch the appropriate resources, be it personnel, supplies, or equipment, to fires and national emergencies during periods of high activity.

Advanced Emergency Dispatcher

The Weber Basin (Utah) Job Corps center offers an Advanced Emergency Dispatcher trade. These students will have the opportunity to graduate as both Expanded Dispatch Recorders and Initial Attack Dispatch Recorders.

Camp Crew

Job Corps wildland fire camp crews construct, set-up, and break down camp facilities at wildland fire incidents. Students clean and maintain facilities, distribute supplies and meals, and provide general organization and maintenance support where needed.

Mobile Kitchen

The Boxelder (South Dakota), Timber Lake (Oregon), and Trapper Creek (Montana) Job Corps centers host regional mobile kitchens staffed by culinary arts students that are deployed to Type 3 incidents across the western United States and are available to prepare and serve meals.
