Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find more than 150,000 miles of trails, 10,000 developed recreation sites, 57,000 miles of streams, 122 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 9,100 miles of byways, 22 recreation areas, 11 scenic areas, 439 wilderness areas, 122 wild and scenic rivers, nine monuments, and one preserve. Is now part of the Kids in Parks initiative. This trail offers an interactive experience while fostering increased physical activity for children and their families.

Art Loeb Trailhead, Camp Daniel Boone

Camp Daniel Boone is located near Cold Mountain and the highest peaks in the Black Balsam area. Many folks use this trail for extended backpacking trips (at least 2-3 days), connector trails to form loops, or shorter sections for day hikes.

Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway

This scenic 79-mile highway loops through the Pisgah Ranger District and nearby countryside. The route is rich in mountain beauty and forest history. A free pamphlet describing highlights is available at the visitor center. Check out the brochure.

Pisgah Ranger Station/Visitor Center

Pisgah Ranger Station offers a variety of experiences including interpretative trails, day hikes, information on the Pisgah National Forest, and interpretative visitor center. The visitor center is operated by FIND Outdoors.   

Sliding Rock Recreation Area

Sliding Rock is a 60 foot natural water slide that ends in a 8 foot deep pool of water, with 2 observation platforms, operated by Adventure Pisgah. Sunburst Campground

Located in Pisgah National Forest on NC 215, Sunburst Campground was once a logging camp. Now nine primitive campsites offer quiet camping near the West Fork, Pigeon Rivers. Sites have picnic tables, tent pads, and lantern hooks. Flush toilets in bath house, and firewood available for purchase.

Catfish Waterfowl Impoundment

The Catfish Waterfowl Impoundment is located in the Croatan National Forest and managed by North Carolina Wildlife commission and the USFS. It is approximately 800 acres in size on what was a drained farm before the USFS acquired it in the late 1960's.
