Resource Advisory Committees

On October 3, 2008 the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act was amended and reauthorized in P.L. 110-343. This law ensures that for the next four years (2008 - 2011), counties across the country can continue to count on stable and transition payments that provide funding for schools and roads, make additional investments in projects that enhance forest ecosystems, and improve cooperative relationships.

The Act addresses funds received on Federal land, which have historically been shared with counties. These funds have been used for schools and roads. For each year, the law allows counties to receive a payment from the Federal government based on the average of their top 3 years (1986-1999) of payments from Federal lands.

It also established the Resource Advisory Committee, consisting of 15 local citizens representing a broad array of backgrounds, interests, and experiences. The Committee recommends projects to the Forest Service to be conducted on Forest Service system lands, or that will benefit resources on Forest Service system lands.

On the Mendocino National Forest there are five participating Resource Advisory Committees; Glenn-Colusa County, Lake County, Mendocino County, Tehama County, and Trinity County.
