Visitor Maps and Guides
The U.S. Forest Service provides several types of publications and maps to help you plan your next adventure. In general, forest visitor and other kinds of maps may be purchased at most Mendocino National Forest Offices.
Motor Vehicle Use Maps show National Forest System routes (roads and trails) or areas designated legally open to motorized travel. The Motor Vehicle Use Map also shows uses allowed by vehicle class (highway-legal vehicles, vehicles less than 50 inches wide and motorcycles), and seasonal allowances. Access free Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs).
Forest Visitor Maps for each national forest and grassland provide forest-wide information on attractions, facilities, services, and opportunities. Visit one of the Mendocino National Forest offices to purchase, view our Interactive Visitor Map, purchase it from the USGS store, or purchase online a mobile-compatible digital map from Avenza.
National Forest Atlases are full color atlases, containing 8.5-inch by 11-inch topographic quadrangle maps at 1 inch to the mile (1:63,360) and are available for many of the forests in California. The Mendocino National Forest has these maps for sale in Avenza Maps for 99 cents per map. They can also be purchased at the USGS Store.
Wilderness maps are topographic maps that show natural features such as mountains, valleys, plains, lakes, rivers, and vegetation using contour lines depicting elevation gain or loss. Each map covers all or part of one wilderness area and the scale is generally 1 inch per mile (1:63,360). The Snow Mountain and Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness maps can be purchased at the USGS Store. Download the Sanhedrin additions to the Mendocino National Forest map.
Mobile-compatible digital maps are available through the Avenza app. The Avenza app provides access to Forest Service maps, such as motor- vehicle-use maps, which are free while pages from national forest atlases are 99 cents and forest visitor maps are $4.99. Prices are pending for other agency maps. Download mobile-compatible forest visitor maps and MVUMs as georeferenced PDFs from Avenza Maps. After downloading and using the app, let us know what you think at SM.FS.R5DigMaps@usda.gov.
FSTopos are topographic maps similar to USGS topographic maps. FSTopo maps are large scale, 7.5-minute, 1:24,000-scale over the conterminous United States, and 15-minute X 20-22.5-minute, 1:63,360-scale over Alaska. You can download PDF or GeoTIFF maps that are georeferenced and work in Avenza. Download free topography maps at Forest Service Topography Maps.
Off-highway vehicle maps show roads and areas open to all-terrain vehicles. These are available at visitor services or you can download high resolution off-highway vehicle (OHV) maps: Stonyford OHV Area Map, Upper Lake OHV North and South Maps.
