All Federal agencies are required to become more sustainable with requirements taking effect now, in 2013, 2015, 2019, 2020, and 2030.

These requirements are spelled out in Executive Order 13423, "Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management," and Executive Order 13514, "Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance."

Sustainability Resources

The Forest Service Handbook's chapter on "Sustainable Buildings" (7309.11, chapter 70) includes instructions to help Forest Service units comply with the executive orders on sustainability.

The Forest Service's Washington Office has a Sustainable Operations Web site.

The Missoula Technology and Development Center's Facilities Toolbox includes a section on sustainability.

The Sustainable/Green Buildings Web site on the Forest Service's internal computer network has additional information.

Leadership in Sustainable Operations (LISO) provides a platform for employees to post or view Sustainability Stories.
