Aviation Technology Modernization Projects
Current Projects
Fire managers are evaluating new technology to improve the efficiency of firefighting operations and the safety of our firefighters.
Current and emerging technology solutions offer the potential for real-time imagery; faster and more dependable communications and data transfer; location tracking of resources; and advanced aerial resources to provide better situational awareness and improved decision making.
Forest Service fire staff are currently working with interagency partners to develop and evaluate a number of different fire-related technology projects. Selected projects were funded through the Wildfire Suppression Funding and Forest Management Act section of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018 (2018 Omnibus Bill).
Highlighted projects include:
- High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) Aircraft
- Counter UAS and Aircraft Tracking
- OU3 Monitoring
- Imagery Governance and Storage
- Data Link Standards
- Ground Based Cameras
