Grangeville Smokejumpers
The Grangeville Smokejumpers are committed to providing a professional level of wildfire management response to public lands throughout the United States. Smokejumpers specialize in the rapid deployment of highly trained and skilled firefighters, mobilized in fixed-wing aircraft and then parachute into remote locations. Grangeville Smokejumpers specialize in unique skills, high physical fitness standards, and a focus on safety. The smokejumpers function as a highly adaptable organization that can work effectively and efficiently in team environments or in single resource leadership positions.
The Grangeville Smokejumper Base is located at the Idaho County Airport in Grangeville, Idaho. It is the most centrally located among the nine smokejumper bases in the U.S. and is surrounded by national forest lands and wilderness areas of various fuel types and terrain. The base is part of the USDA Forest Service’s Region 1, which includes northern Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and parts of South Dakota and Wyoming. From Grangeville, the smokejumpers can rapidly mobilize to Forest Service Regions 4 and 6 within 30 minutes as well as other federal jurisdictions.
