Bryophytes and Lichens

Please also see the Interagency Special Status and Sensitive Species Program (ISSSSP) website for additional species information.

Some Survey and Manage species also have or had Sensitive species status or have information compiled by the Interagency Special Status and Sensitive Species Program (ISSSSP). Please navigate to the ISSSSP website, for survey protocols, field guides, inventory reports, and conservation planning documents (that provide habitat information, site management guidance, and more). These documents include the best available scientific information to utilize when applying the 2001 Survey and Manage standards and guidelines to determine survey needs and site management.

Please note that the most efficient way to have all available documents result from your query is to "Search By Taxonomy" and select "Non-vascular Plants-Bryophytes" or "Non-vascular Plants-Lichens". Or if you are interested in one species, "Search by Species (Scientific)" and select the applicable species name. In addition, you should query "General: Multi-species - Bryophytes (No Common Name)" and "General: Multi-species - Lichens (No Common Name)" to check if the species queried is included in a document with multiple species.

  • Transmittal Memo amending Survey Protocol for Protection Buffer Bryophytes, Version 2.0 (6 species) - September 1999 - Adobe .pdf File - 15 kB
  • Transmittal Memo for Survey Protocol for Protection Buffer Bryophytes, Version 2.0 (6 species) - March 1999 - Adobe .pdf File - 19 kB
    • Attachment 1 - Survey Protocols for Protection Buffer Bryophytes, Version 2.0 - Adobe .pdf File - 329 kB
      • "Protection buffer species" are no longer applicable. The survey protocol is being included for survey methodology only. This survey protocol applies to Schistostega pennata and Tetraphis geniculata (Category A species require pre-disturbance surveys). Survey triggers are superseded by the January 2001 Record of Decision, standards and guidelines section, page 22, Habitat-Disturbing Activities.
      • The following species no longer require pre-project surveys due to 2003 category placement or removal from Survey and Manage.
      • Brotherella roelli - Category E
      • Buxbaumia viridis - Category E in California
      • Rhizomnium nudum - Category B in Oregon, strategic surveys are considered complete, and no equivalent-effort surveys are required; see above for the "Transmittal Memo for Category B Species where Strategic Surveys are Considered Complete - 2006"
      • Ulota megalospora - removed from Survey and Manage
  • Transmittal Memo for Bryophyte Survey Protocols (5 species) - 1997 - Adobe .pdf File - 69 kB
    • This survey protocol only applies to Ptilidium californicum (Category A species in California). Survey triggers are superseded by the January 2001 Record of Decision, standards and guidelines section, page 22, Habitat-Disturbing Activities. The survey protocol is being included for survey methodology only. - Document will be available shortly.
      • Please note that three of the four remaining species require equivalent-effort surveys as Category B species: Kurzia makinoana, Marsupella emarginata, and Tritomaria exsectiformis.
      • See above for the "Transmittal Memo for Equivalent Effort Surveys for Survey and Manage Category B Species; and Survey Methodology for One Lichen Species with Category Change from 2003 Annual Species Review - 2006"
      • No equivalent-effort surveys are required for Diplophyllum plicatum. See above for the "Transmittal Memo for Category B Species where Strategic Surveys are Considered Complete - 2006"

  • Natural History and Management Considerations for Northwest Forest Plan Survey and Manage Lichens (29 species) - 2003 - Adobe .pdf File - 6.35 MB
    • Thirteen of the 29 species were removed from Survey and Manage. This document remains applicable to 16 lichens, but more current species fact sheets, conservation assessments, and conservation planning tools are available on the ISSSSP website for many of these species. Please see the first two paragraphs at the top of this page for tips on searching.
      • Bryoria pseudocapillaris, Bryoria spiralifera, Bryoria subcana, Buellia oidalea, Dendriscocaulon intricatulum, Dermatocarpon luridum (now Dermatocarpon meiophyllizum), Hypogymnia duplicata, Leptogium rivale, Lobaria linita, Niebla cephalota, Pannaria rubiginosa, Pseudocyphellaria perpetua (now Pseudocyphellaria hawaiiensis), Pseudocyphellaria rainierensis, Teloschistes flavicans, Tholurna dissimilis, and Usnea hesperina
  • Transmittal Memo for Lichen Management Recommendations (29 species) – 2000 - Adobe .pdf File - 47 kB
    • Attachment 1 – General Guidance for Use of S&M Management Recommendations (at the end of transmittal memo)
    • Attachment 2 – Management Recommendations for Survey and Manage Lichens (29 species), Version 2.0
      • Documents are not provided here since "Natural History and Management Considerations for Northwest Forest Plan Survey and Manage Lichens" released in 2003 supersedes this information. See above (first bullet under this section (Site Management)).
