Natural Resources

The health of our nation depends, in many ways, on the vitality of our nation’s forests and grasslands. The Forest Service manages these important areas to balance the benefits and uses that contribute to local communities with sustaining the health of the ecosystems and resources over time.

Natural Resources benefit communities by:

  • Creating jobs and revenue in industries that rely on natural resources management, including logging, forest restoration, recreation, tourism, and ranching.
  • Improving forest health by reducing hazardous fuels, enhancing clean water, and restoring habitat for plants and animals
  • Enhancing public safety by lowering wildfire risks and improving access.
  • Boosting tourism and recreation by maintaining healthy, accessible National Forests.

Invasive Plant Treatments

The Umatilla National Forest will soon begin an integrated approach of prevention, manual, mechanical, herbicide, biological control and cultural treatments to reduce the risk of invasive species expanding on the forest.

Silviculture

Silviculture is the science of controlling the establishment, growth, composition, and health of forests and woodlands. Silvicultural activities are used to meet diverse objectives and values of society.

As stewards of a rich and diverse landscape, the Forest Service manages several types of resources.  The following links offer a program overview, lists of current projects or programs, regulations and permits, and other information.

Rangeland and Grazing

The Umatilla National Forest has a multiple-use mission, which includes livestock grazing. Approximately 810,000 of the Umatilla National Forest's 1.4 million acres (which is about 58% of the National Forest acres) are rangeland and grazeable forestland.
