Other Special Forest Product Permits

The Siuslaw National Forest has several special forest products that are available for harvest. If you have a question about a specific permit but do not see information about the forest product, contact a district office.

  • Permit Duration: 15 days on Hebo Ranger District; 30 days on Central Coast Ranger District
  • Permit Fee ($): Minimum of 500 pounds for $25. 5 cents per additional pound. Maximum of 1,000 pounds for $50
  • Allowable Quantities: Limit 1,000 pounds per household

Roots
  • Permit Duration: 15or 30 days on Central Coast Ranger District
  • Permit Fee ($):  10 cents per pound ($20/200 pounds)

How to Obtain a Permit

Special forest product permits can be purchased from the district office where you plan to harvest from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. When purchasing, you must provide a valid identification card issued by a state or U.S. federal government and your vehicle make, model, and license plate number.

Permits that require a supplemental request form can be filled out at a ranger station, printed and brought to a ranger station, or emailed to r6_siuslaw_wwweb_front_desk@usda.gov.

Where to Harvest

  • Only harvest in designated areas as listed on your permit. Maps will be provided with your permit.
  • Gather bark and roots in designated areas at least 200 feet away from recreational sites (trails, campgrounds, picnic and day-use areas) and streams.
  • Harvesting is prohibited in Botanical Areas, Research Natural Areas, wilderness areas, scenic areas, and land other than designated on the map received with your permit.

How to Protect the Forest While Harvesting

  • Harvest products in a caring and ecologically sound way.
  • Pack garbage and food scraps out with you.
  • Follow the terms and conditions on your permit.
