Fire Use Restrictions Stage 2
All campfires will be prohibited in Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park starting at 12 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025. This applies to anything that produces ash, including charcoal grills.
Gas or propane stoves, lanterns, or heating devices are permitted in campgrounds and wilderness areas if there is no flammable material within three feet of the device. These stoves must be equipped with an on-off switch or valve capable of immediately extinguishing the flame. Extreme caution is urged with any open flame.

FIRE USE RESTRICTIONS
Pursuant to 16 USC § 551 and 36 CFR 261.50 (a) and (b), the following special restrictions and prohibitions are established on all areas, roads, and trails within the Olympic National Forest, within the State of Washington, and as depicted on the attached exhibits, hereby incorporated in this Order as Exhibit A. This Order becomes effective on August 1 2025, at 12:01 am (0001) and will remain in effect through October 31 2025, at 2400, or until rescinded.
PROHIBITIONS:
- Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, including a charcoal fire and pellet fire on all areas, roads, and trails throughout Olympic National Forest. 36 CFR § 261.52(a).
- Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a designated campground, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material. 36 CFR § 261.52(d).
- Using an explosive. 36 CFR § 261.52(b).
- Operating or using any internal or external combustion engine without a spark arresting device properly installed, maintained, and in effective working order meeting either:
- U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service Standard 5100-1(d); or
- Appropriate Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE recommended practice J335(b) and J350(a). 36 CFR §§ 261.5(j), 261.52(g)
- Welding, or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame. 36 CFR § 261.52(h).
- Possessing or using a motor vehicle off National Forest System Roads, EXCEPT when operating in compliance with travel management rule and the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) pursuant to 36 CFR § 261.13. 36 CFR § 261.56.
- Violating any state law concerning burning, fires, or which is for the purpose of preventing or restricting the spread of fire. 36 CFR § 261.5(i).
PROHIBITION AREA:
All lands, roads and trails throughout the entirety of the Olympic National Forest Boundary as shown in Exhibit A.
EXEMPTIONS:
Pursuant to 36 CFR § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:
- Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire-fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
- Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation Order), specifically exempting them from this order.
- Petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns, or heating devices provided such devices meet the fire underwriter’s specifications for safety. All combustible material within a six-foot radius of the stove must be removed.
- Wood burning appliances with spark arrestor screens that are installed within cabins or other permanent structures.
These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 CFR Part 261, Subpart A. Violations of this prohibition are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or
$10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both (16 U.S.C. § 551; 18 U.S.C. §§ 3551, 3559, 3571, and 3581).
