Cottonwood Picnic Area

Located off State Highway 27 south of the Cimarron River, this shady site has many accessible picnic tables as well as a steam tractor display, interpretative signs and a playground area. Also available are grills and restrooms. The Turkey Trail is nearby.

General Information

Open year-round

Day use only: open 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Commercial outfitter and guides are required to have a special use permit. Fees vary.

The following regulations/restrictions apply:

  • No horses are allowed in the picnic area.
  • No wood fires are allowed; be aware of any fire restrictions.
  • No camping is allowed in the picnic area.
  • No discharge of firearms or fireworks is permitted.

No fees are required for this site

Pets must be leashed at all times.

Directions

From Elkhart, Kan., take State Highway 27 north for approximately 7 miles. Just south of the Cimarron River, turn east onto Forest System Road 700. Take an immediate left (north) turn and continue a short distance into the picnic area.
