Discover the Sula Ranger District—your gateway to adventure in the stunning southeast corner of the Bitterroot National Forest. Nestled near the historic ranching community of Sula, Montana, this extraordinary district borders both the Beaverhead-Deerlodge and Salmon-Challis National Forests, offering visitors access to more than 250,000 acres of public land, including 41,000 acres of the breathtaking Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness.

History comes alive here. Walk in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark along a preserved segment of their legendary trail and stand at Ross’ Hole—the iconic meeting place between the explorers and the Flathead Indians. The district is also rich in Tribal heritage, featuring one of the few culturally verified segments of the Nee-Me-Poo National Historic Trail and the revered Medicine Tree, a sacred site in Salish lore.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for exploration. A dramatic stretch of the Continental Divide Trail winds through rugged landscapes and past snow-draped peaks nearing 10,000 feet. Whether you prefer quiet wilderness hikes or motorized trail adventures, the district offers something for every type of explorer.

Camping options abound—from convenient roadside sites to remote, peaceful hideaways. At Indian Trees Campground, visitors can view the historic “Indian-peeled” ponderosa pines, scarred during Tribal cambium harvests in the 1800s. Other favorite spots include Spring Gulch Campground along the East Fork of the Bitterroot River and trail-access-rich areas like Crazy Creek, Warm Springs, and Martin Creek. For horse enthusiasts, Crazy Creek Horse Campground provides comfortable accommodations designed specifically for equine adventurers.

Make your getaway even more memorable with a stay in one of the district’s historic cabins and lookouts. The East Fork Guard Station, built in 1914, welcomes both large groups and those seeking a cozy, riverside retreat. Medicine Point and McCart Lookouts offer unparalleled 360-degree views and wilderness immersion, while the rustic Twogood Cabin—once a homesteader cow camp—delivers an authentic step back in time.

When winter arrives, the Sula area transforms into a snow-lover’s paradise. Lost Trail Powder Mountain, located just 12 miles south of Sula, offers outstanding alpine skiing and riding. Nordic skiers will find both groomed and ungroomed trails at Chief Joseph Pass, while snowmobilers can explore miles of ungroomed routes radiating from the Lost Trail Snowpark Trailhead.

From rich cultural history and scenic beauty to year-round recreation, the Sula Ranger District invites you to explore, unwind, and experience the very best of Montana’s wild country.
