National Situation

Lighter winds yesterday aided containment efforts on large fires in Oregon.  Large fires driven by gusty winds in grass and brush are established in Northern California. Northern California has increased its preparedness level to PL2 in response to increased activity. Red flag warnings are in effect for north east California and north west Nevada. Nationally, initial attack remains light.

USDA Forest Service Situation

Containment continues to rise on the Trail Mountain fire in Utah while the large fires in Colorado continue to exhibit minimal growth.  There was limited activity elsewhere on USDA Forest Service administered lands.

Weather Discussion

Hot and dry conditions are expected across the Southwest, Great Basin, and California as the high pressure ridge amplifies over the desert. A cold front moving across eastern Oregon and central Idaho may create pockets of critical fire weather conditions in the lower elevations as breezy winds and isolated convection interact with moderately low afternoon humidities. Low pressure over the Great Plains will allow for the development of scattered storms near the center of the low pressure area over Nebraska and also along a dry line that extends south through Texas. Across the East, a stationary front will allow for the development of afternoon convection across the Deep South.

In Alaska, high pressure will strengthen over the Interior and will allow for continued warm and dry condition along a chance for afternoon storms.
