Remembering Joyce Davis

December 12, 2022

Joyce Davis was a beloved employee in the Washington office. She served her entire 22-year career on the Legislative Affairs staff. USDA Forest Service photo by Richard Thornburgh.

Legislative Affairs, and much of the Washington Office, lost a dear colleague and friend with the passing of Joyce Davis on Dec. 4, 2022. Joyce joined the Forest Service in 2000 and served her entire career in the Legislative Affairs Unit.

Joyce touched the lives of numerous Forest Service employees who came through during her 22 years in Legislative Affairs. Current and former directors, deputy directors and legislative specialists were affectionately known to her as “my staff.” Not only did she make sure Legislative Affairs was properly functioning and everyone had the tools and resources to be successful in their legislative work, she was also the heart of the staff and served as a voice of calm in the chaos.

Former members of Joyce's staff have gone on to serve as Chief, regional forester, associate deputy chiefs, Washington Office directors, forest supervisors and other leadership positions. Regardless of their positions, Joyce always considered her current and former staff to be part of her extended family. She cared for them as if they were her own and, in return, was dearly loved by a vast network of friends who will never forget her and her beautiful smile.

Outside of Legislative Affairs, Joyce had many close friends she made over the years within the agency. Whether it was planning holiday parties, her famous Cinco de Mayo celebrations, coordinating agency events or working on other special projects, Joyce would often say, “We’ll get it done, because that’s what we do.” She leaves behind many great memories and funny stories among all her agency colleagues who loved her and greatly admired her work ethic.

Outside of work, Joyce had a passion for helping others through her involvement with her Truck Club. Known as “Shorty” within the club, Joyce would organize efforts to feed the homeless and other community projects to help those in need.

Her biggest love, of course, was her family. She enjoyed spending time with her daughter, Jamet Spriull, and granddaughter Taylor during her visits to North Carolina.

A memorial service will be held for Joyce Davis on Dec. 17, 2022. Viewing will begin at 2 p.m. and the memorial service will be 3 p.m.-4 p.m. The viewing and service will occur at Briscoe & Tonic Funeral Home, 7 Industrial Park Drive, Waldorf, MD 20602. Forest Service employees are welcome to attend.
