Visitor Map: A useful internal resource for data improvements

April 6, 2017

The agency’s Interactive Visitor Map continues to demonstrate its value as a useful digital resource with the public. The Interactive Visitor Map is currently averaging 1,500 page views a day; that’s up from 500 page views per day just six months ago.

One aspect that often gets overlooked with the Interactive Visitor Map is its usefulness to agency employees. It’s a great resource for forest and grassland staff to quickly identify data discrepancies with roads, trails and recreation sites datasets. Once a problem is found on the visitor map, forests and grasslands can either make the corrections in the WWW Portal (for rec. sites) or within NRM Infra (for roads & trails). Both of these sources feed the agency’s Enterprise Data Warehouse, which in turn helps populate the visitor map with agency data. As data improvements are made, products like the visitor map are updated nightly.

As the Forest Service continues to make data improvements, everybody benefits: the visitor map, Recreation.gov, forest and grassland public websites, digital products from third-party developers and most importantly, the visiting public.

The agency’s Interactive Visitor Map can be found at here.

All employees are encouraged to try out and use the map. If you find something in the map that does not look correct, work with your forest and grassland public affairs, recreation or GIS staff to make a correction in the appropriate system.
