Map and Directions to BBVC

The turn off for Portage Glacier Road and the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center is located approximately 50 miles south of Anchorage or 79 miles north of Seward on the Seward Highway (AK-1).

Turn onto Portage Glacier Road and go approximately 5 miles until you reach the fork in the road. Follow the road to the right at the fork and there will be a turn-off to the Portage Glacier Daylodge on the left. Keep following the road as it loops around. Lake front parking is just up ahead and if you continue towards the visitor center, there is parking available with special areas for busses and larger vehicles. (Bearing to the left at the fork in the road will bring you to the short Portage Lake Tunnel, the Bear Valley Scenic Viewpoint, and the Anton Anderson Tunnel to Whittier.)

The first road off to the right after you pass the Portage Glacier Daylodge is Byron Glacier Road which will lead you to the Byron Glacier Trail. A little past the trailhead, the road dead ends at the Portage Glacier Cruises boat dock where you can board the M/V Ptarmigan and get an up close look view of Portage Glacier on a 1 hour cruise (operating five time a day under USFS permit).

Stop by the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center for a map of this area or for more information about the Chugach National Forest.
