Flaming Gorge NRA Management Plan

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area Management Plan

The Ashley National Forest is updating the current Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area (NRA) Management Plan which was completed in 1986. The plan will address increased visitation and visitor use to align with the new Ashley National Forest Plan.

  • WHERE? - The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area located in northeastern Utah and southwestern Wyoming.
  • WHAT ARE WE PROPOSING? Develop, analyze, and adopt a management plan for the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.
  • WHY ARE WE DOING THIS AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS AND FOREST PLAN REVISION? - The existing Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area Management Plan was completed in 1986 and does not reflect the changes that have occurred in recreation and other uses. The Ashley National Forest recently revised its Forest Plan according to the 2012 planning rule. The revised Forest Plan was completed in January, 2024. The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area was created in 1968 providing specific management direction that differs from general forest areas, with a focus on recreational opportunities.  As a result, a plan to address this focus on recreation and recreation management is needed. The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area Management Plan will be incorporated, once completed, into the revised forest plan.

What is Happening with the Planning Process Now?
