Aurora Area - Hibbing to Lake Superior

Welcome to the Laurentian Ranger District. This district is the southern portion of the Superior National Forest stretching from McCarthy State Park north of Hibbing, MN to near the north shore of Lake Superior. The district office is in Aurora.

Visit the Laurentian Divide and hike the 15-mile hiking trail or 5-miles of bike trail. Enjoy scenic views of the continental divide that separates the northern and southern flow of watersheds across the country.

Spend some time at the St. Louis River, starting at Seven Beaver Lake and ending at Lake Superior.

During the fall visitors can take advantage of the Laurentian Fall Color Tour, with numerous stops along the tour that will be a treat of fall color, or enjoyed in the spring and summer as a relaxing drive around the forest. This tour includes the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway, a 54-mile road with several waysides where you can stop and take in the view or have a picnic.

In the winter enjoy snowmobiling or cross country skiing on any of the winter trails available. For snowmobilers portions of the Seven Beavers Trail, Yukon Trail, Pequaywan Trail, and North Shore Corridor Trail run through the area, providing miles of adventure. For those wanting to cross-country ski or snowshoe dozens of mile of trail are available at Giants Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Big Aspen or the Surgeon River Trails.
