Motor Vehicle Use Maps & Georeferenced Maps

Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) show which routes (roads and trails) are open to motor vehicle travel, what types of vehicles they are open to, and what season they are open. The published hard copy MVUM is the legal document-of-record and is available, free of charge, in the Forest Supervisor’s office. The MVUM is the key to understanding each district's motorized transportation system and can be used in conjunction with the visitor map to determine which roads are open, and how far you are allowed to drive off of the road.  Various travel aids/maps (for select Smartphones and GPS units) are available below as supplements to the MVUM, to help you make sure you know which routes are open to motorized use.

Pick up your free MVUM:

MVUMs are available at the Bradshaw/Chino Valley Ranger Districts Office in Prescott.

Download MVUMs:

  • East Zone (Verde Ranger District and eastern parts of the Chino Valley Ranger District)
  • West Zone (Bradshaw Ranger District, including the area around the City of Prescott, and western parts of the Chino Valley Ranger District)

Other:

  • Base Map - Topography - This 20 MB map uses our 1:24,000 FS topo USFS digital GIS topography map, roughly equivalent to 1:24000 topographic quadrangle (like USGS quads only produced by and for USFS)
  • Prescott NF Visitor Map

The City of Prescott has several outdoor shops that sell hard copy topographical maps, or you can download them at the FS Geodata Clearinghouse.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Geographic Information Systems or GIS are computer systems, software and data used to analyze and display spatial or locational data about surface features. One of the strengths of GIS is the capability to overlay or compare multiple feature layers. A user can then analyze the relationship between the layers.

Data, reports and maps produced through GIS are used by managers and resource specialists to make decisions about land management activities on The National Forests. The Prescott National Forest maintains and utilizes GIS data for various features on the ground.
