North Wrangell Trail


The North Wrangell Trail is part of the Rainbow Falls/Institute Creek/North Wrangell Trail complex. It provides access to the North Wrangell High Country Shelter and the North Wrangell Pond Shelter. Trail can be accessed via the Rainbow Falls Trailhead or via the Spur Road on Wrangell Island.

General Information

Directions: Option 1 - From Wrangell, drive 4.5 miles south on Zimovia Highway to Rainbow Falls Trailhead. Hike up Rainbow Falls Trail 0.6 miles to its intersection with the Institute Creek Trail. Follow Institute Creek Trail approximately 1.6 miles to its intersection with the North Wrangell High Country Trail. Option 2 - From Wrangell, drive 3.6 miles out the Spur Road Extension (past the golf course) to the North Wrangell High Country Trailhead.

Activities

Day Hiking

Trail accesses one of the highest points on Wrangell Island (2700') and provides excellent views of the surrounding bodies of water and mountains including the mountains of the mainland. An excellent day hike is to combine the Rainbow Falls/Institute Creek/North Wrangell trails to traverse from one side of Wrangell Island to the other.
Difficulty Level: Most Difficult

Backpacking

Provides an opportunity for overnight or multiple night trip to North Wrangell High Country shelter and Pond shelter or link with Institute Trail to access Shoemaker Overlook shelter.
