Forest Order

Grasshopper Fire Closure Expansion

Pursuant to 16 USC § 551 and 36 CFR 261.50 (a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited on the Barlow and Hood River Ranger Districts of the Mt. Hood National Forest as shown on the attached map (Exhibit A). These prohibitions will become effective August 11, 2026, and will remain in effect until December 31, 2026, or until updated or rescinded.

Going into or being upon National Forest System lands, roads, or trails within the fire closure area.

  1. Going onto or being within an area closed for public health and safety. 36 CFR § 261.53 (e)
  2. Being upon a closed road. 36 CFR § 261.54 (e)
  3. Being on a closed trail. 36 CFR § 261.55 (a)

CLOSURE DESCRIPTION

As depicted on “Exhibit A” the following area as administered by the Mt. Hood National Forest shall be closed as described:

The Fire Closure Area boundary begins at the intersection of Forest Road 48 and the Wasco County line, then continues south, then east, and then north along Forest Road 48 to its intersection with the Forest Boundary, then continues north along the Forest Boundary to the intersection with Forest Road 1722, then continues along Forest Road 1722 west then south to the intersection with Forest Road 1720 then continues south along Forest Road 1720 to the intersection of Forest Road 1700, then continues north along Forest Road 1700 to the intersection of Forest Road 1700-680, then continues along Forest Road 1700-680 to Forest Road 1700-684, then continues along Forest Road 1700-684 until it crosses the Section 33 boundary, then follows the Section line/Forest Boundary to Oregon State Highway 35. The closure then follows Oregon state Highway 35 south until it intersects with Forest Road 3510, then continues southwest along Forest Road 3510 to the intersection with Forest Road 3512 then follows Forest Road 3512 to the intersection of Forest Trail 643, then continues Southwest along the Forest Trail to the intersection of Forest Trail 600A, then continues along the 600A trail until it merges with Forest Trail 600B, then continues southwest to the summit of Mt Hood. From Mt Hood summit, the closure then follows the Hood River County Boundary South until it intersects the Pacific Crest trail. It then follows the Pacific Crest trail to the Wasco County Boundary, then continues East along Wasco County Boundary until it intersects with Forest Road 48, as shown on the attached map. The closure isn’t applicable to private, or state inholdings and the Pacific Crest trail remains open to the public.

Being on any National Forest System road or associated spur roads, within the Fire Closure Area, as shown on the attached map (Exhibit A) including but not limited to those and listed below. 36 C.F.R. § 261.54(e).

EXEMPTIONS:

Pursuant to Title 36 CFR 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this order:

  1. Any person with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission.
  2. Any Federal, State, or local official or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official duty.
  3. Owners or lessees of land within the closed area.

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 CFR part 261, subpart A.

Violations of these Prohibitions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual and $10,000 for an organization or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months, or both. [16 USC § 551, 18 USC § 3559 and § 3571].

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 CFR part 261, subpart A.

PURPOSE:

The closure is necessary to provide protection for forest users, firefighting personnel, and natural resources.
