Mt. Whitney Trailhead Campground

Located both above and below the overflow parking lot, all campsites are walk-in. Sites have flat tent pads and bear proof food lockers. Restrooms and water are located by the parking lot.

General Information

Traveling in Bear Country

Historically, there has been a high level of bear activity in the Mt. Whitney area. Bear-proof lockers are located in the parking area at Mt. Whitney Trailhead Campground. All food and scented items must be stored in the lockers. All trash must be disposed of in the bear proof trash receptacles. Do not store food, trash or scented items in your vehicle.

Quiet hours are 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m.

Interagency America the Beautiful Senior and Access passes and Golden Age and Golden Access passes are accepted for half priced camping. Follow the instructions on the bulletin board at the campground entrance or see the camp host.

  • One night stay limit.
  • Active bear area, bear boxes are provided and must be used (typical bear box size 48" x 30" x 36")
  • Camping is not allowed in the parking lot.

Overnight Use:
Single Site: $24 per night

Dogs must be leashed in all developed recreation sites.

Directions

From Highway 395 in Lone Pine, CA, turn west (at the stoplight) onto Whitney Portal Road. The campground is approximately 12 miles from Lone Pine. Park in the "Overflow" parking lot at Whitney Portal. The road is usually open from May to November, depending on snow conditions.
