Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50 (a), the following rules are hereby established for occupancy
and camping use of both developed and undeveloped areas of the Manti-La Sal National
Forests in Utah and Colorado:
- Persons may camp within designated campgrounds or on undeveloped sites not
closed to camping within the Forests for a period of not more than 14 days within any
period of 28 consecutive days. The 14 day limit may be used either through a number
of separate visits or through 14 days of continuous occupation during the 28 day
period. Campers must relocate to another site after the 14th day of occupation. This
new site must be at least ten miles, in a straight line, away from the previous location.
Once the 14 day camping limit has been reached in a given site, use shall not occur
again until at least 14 days have elapsed from the last day of use. 36 CFR 261.58 (a). - Campsites in developed campgrounds are limited to eight (8) users per single-family
unit and sixteen (16) users per multiple family units. 36 CFR 261.58(f). - No structure or private property may be left unoccupied for more 72 hours at a site in
undeveloped areas without prior written permission of the Forest Officer in charge in
connection with any authorized use of National Forest lands. This includes structures
or property in those areas occupied during the 14 day stay limit. 36 CFR 261.58 (a)
and (g). - Camping in any other areas designated Closed to Camping. 36 CFR 261.58 (e).
DEFINITION
Camping is defined as the erecting of a tent or shelter of natural or synthetic
material, parking of a motor vehicle, motor home, or trailer, and/or preparing a
sleeping bag or other bedding material for the apparent purpose of overnight
occupancy of a site.
Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50 ( e ), the following persons are exempt from this order:
- Persons with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or
om1ss10n. - Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescuer or fire
fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
The foregoing prohibitions apply to all of the Manti-La Sal National Forest.
Violation of the prohibitions is punishable by a fine or not more than $5000.00 or
imprisonment for not more than 6 months or both. Title 16 USC 551.
