Thunder River trail starts on Forest Service land for approximately 200 ft. before crossing over to the Grand Canyon National Park. Commercial and private activities must adhere to Forest Service regulations while operating on Forest Service land.

General Information

All commercial use requires a Forest Service special use permit. For NPS back country permits which are required for overnight use within the Grand Canyon National Park, call the North Rim Back Country Office at 928-638-7868.

Getting There

Trailhead/Starting Points

End of Forest Road 232.

Directions

From Fredonia (approximately 47.8 miles):

  • Begin south on US Highway 89A for approximately 1.6 miles,
  • Turn right onto Forest Road 22 and follow for approximately 22.9 miles,
  • Turn right onto Forest Road 423 and follow for approximately 5 miles,
  • Continue straight onto Forest Road 427 and follow for approximately 11.1 miles,
  • Turn right onto Forest Road 425 and follow for approximately 2.4 miles,
  • Turn slight right onto Forest Road 232 and follow for approximately 4.8 miles to the trailhead just beyond Indian Hollow Campground.

From Jacob Lake (approximately 35.9 miles):

  • Head south on US Highway 67 for approximately 0.3 miles,
  • Turn right onto Forest Road 461 and follow for approximately 8.6 miles,
  • Turn left onto Forest Road 22 and follow for approximately 8.7 miles,
  • Turn right onto Forest Road 447 and follow for approximately 3.8 miles,
  • Turn left onto Forest Road 427 and follow for approximately 7.3 miles,
  • Turn right onto Forest Road 425 and follow for approximately 2.4 miles,
  • Turn slight right onto Forest Road 232 and follow for approximately 4.8 miles to the trailhead just beyond Indian Hollow Campground.
