Turkey Run #42 Trailhead

Trailhead for Caledonia Trail #42 and access to the northern portion of the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. .75 miles of this trail was logged in the summer of 2017. The beginning of the trail is a moderate incline through ponderosa forests to a saddle. As the trail drops down to Diamond Creek, it passes a waterfall and interesting rock formaitons. The trail will arrive at Diamond Creek which supports a lush mixed confier forest ecosystem.

Parking is available overnight; occupancy and use at the trailhead is dawn to dusk.

No pass required

Permits are required for commercial or organized uses.

Please do not camp in trailhead parking areas. All stock feed brought onto the Gila National Forest must be certified weed free.

No fees are required for this site

Pets must be leashed in the trailhead

Please contact the Gila National Forest Supervisors Office at 575-388-8201 for information about outfitters and guides who are authorized to operate on the forest.

Directions

From Winston, go north on New Mexico Highway 52 for 9 miles to New Mexico Highway 59. Turn left (west) on Highway 59 and proceed approximately 14.5 miles to Forest Road 226 and turn left (south). Follow Forest Road 226 for approximately 8.5 miles to Forest Road 500 (Turkey Run Road). Proceed straight ahead on Forest Road 500 and follow it to its end.
