Winchester Mountains

The Winchester Mountains are a small range approximately 15 miles long, forming a southern extension of the much larger Galiuro Mountains to the northwest. Except for pine forests on a few north-facing slopes, the vegetation is mostly open evergreen, oak woodlands, and scrub grasslands. High clearance vehicles are required to access the mountain range due to the rough and rugged terrain.

Northwest access (in and out only from Mesas Road):

  • Forest Service Road 659: On the ridge of a canyon until the switchbacks towards N-O Canyon Road. Cattle are present and should be given space.
  • Forest Service Road 6618: Extremely steep and dead-ends at a cattle watering tank.
  • Forest Service Road 6619: Extremely steep, provides access to 6620, 6620B, and 6620C. Recommended only for side-by-sides.

Southern access (in and out only from N. Mule Shoe Road):

  • Forest Service Road 6621: Only accessible on the westside via North Mule Shoes Road. This entrance requires entering private land to access, travel respectfully.

The southernmost of four mountain ranges in the Safford Ranger District.
