Arizona Scenic Trail - Passage 03: Canelo Hills West

The first 13 passages of the Arizona National Scenic Trail pass through the Coronado National Forest.

  • Canelo Pass to Highway 82 – 18.2 miles

Prepare yourself for an overgrown section as this area cannot be cleared prior to October 1st due to threatened and endangered species.

As you leave Canelo Pass, hikers may be joined by mountain bikers or horseback riders. This section is rarely used by recreators but is highly used by cattle. Please close all gates that you open and filter any water you get from the stock tanks. A reroute took place in 2025 that now keeps the trail off the road but does move it outside the town of Patagonia. By taking Harshaw Road Connector (expect mining traffic once you begin hiking on Harshaw Road) or the Patagonia Trail Track Trail, through hikers can use Patagonia as a resupply stop.
