FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Aug. 26, 2025 — The Coconino National Forest will move from Stage 2 to Stage 1 fire restrictions, effective 8 a.m., Wednesday, August 27, due to widespread precipitation across all three districts of the forest.

Motorized closures around specific areas of the San Francisco Peaks, Marshall Lake area and Pumphouse Wash area will be lifted, and campers at developed recreation sites are allowed to burn campfires following proper campfire guidance.

Under Stage 1 fire restrictions, fires, campfires, charcoal, coal and wood stoves are prohibited, except within a developed recreation site. Smoking is also prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle, building or within a developed recreation site. Fireworks are always prohibited on all national forests.

Using a device solely fueled by propane that can be turned on and off is allowed in areas that are barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within 3 feet of the device.

Recreation shooting is allowed on the Coconino National Forest as target shooting regulations are followed.

The Coconino National Forest will continue to assess forest conditions and weather forecasts to make appropriate decisions in the future as to when fire restrictions are completely rescinded, remain at Stage 1, or increase to Stage 2.

Year-round fire restrictions in some areas of the Coconino National Forest, including the Flagstaff area, Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon area and West Sedona area, and Pumphouse Wash area, will remain in effect.
