Tunnel Lake Trail #1439

This trail offers hikers some of the most scenic views around. During July and August, wildflowers are in full bloom and blanket the alpine surroundings with a multitude of colors. This trail is very popular with photographers and hikers seeking pristine vistas.

This trail provides access to the Continental Divide Trail.

General Information

Special use permits are required for all types of commercial activity, including outfitting and guiding. For more information, please contact the Salida Ranger District at 719-539-3591.

Water from the creek and lake is drinkable when properly filtered or treated.

This trail is closed to motorized vehicles.

Getting There

Parking

Parking is limited to three to four vehicles.

Directions

From Nathrop, (Highway 285), travel west on County Road 162 for approximately 16 miles to the historic town. As you drive through St. Elmo, watch for a road on the right that travels over a small wooden bridge. Turn right on this road, crossing the bridge, and then turn left and travel for 0.25 miles to the Tincup Pass access road (Forest Road 267). Tincup Pass requires a four-wheel drive vehicle. Stay on this road for 4.2 miles to the trailhead located on the left side of the road.

The Tunnel Lake Trail is a beautiful high-altitude hike that will give hikers some of the best wildflower viewing around. July is the best month for hiking and viewing wildflowers.
