Stay golden on the Forest

Safe practices this leaf peeping season

September 4, 2025

As Colorado’s fall colors begin to change and near their peak, the Forest Service is asking visitors to Do Colorado Right by keeping leaf peeping season safe, enjoyable and sustainable.

Aspen leaves draw thousands of visitors to mountain passes, winding roads and quiet trails. For many, leaf peeping is a beloved tradition and an annual chance to reconnect with the changing seasons. With many visitors expected to travel to popular scenic byways and trails this season, parking and roadway safety are top priorities. Visitors should park only in designated areas, never stop on roadways, and avoid parking on fragile vegetation.

We recommend planning your visit outside of peak peeping hours. By exploring on weekdays or before the mid-day rush, you are likely to find parking more easily and enjoy the fall colors without the crowds. Arriving early in the morning or during the week not only helps ease congestion but also helps protect popular sites and improves your own experience.

Leaf peepers are also encouraged to look beyond the most popular spots. Use this season as a chance to explore new trails, different scenic byways and lesser-known groves of aspen. The forest is vast, and aspen thrive in surprising places. Some of the brightest fall colors can be found in areas that have experienced change, either from wildfire or forest management projects. Aspen are resilient trees often returning stronger after change, and exploring these landscapes offers a unique glimpse of renewal.

The autumn season is one of the forest’s most exciting times. With care and respect, we can ensure that everyone enjoys the colors safely while protecting the land. Whether you’re traveling for a day or just a scenic drive, remember to “know before you go” this leaf-peeping season.
