Rooted in Research: Connecting Northern Research Station Science with National Forest System Land Mangers

A recent issue of Rooted in Research.

Forest managers in the Eastern Region of the USDA Forest Service are making decisions today that will influence the next century of the region’s forests, and they need the best available science as they make those decisions. Their need for convenient and timely connection to that science is equally profound. The Northern Research Station is meeting that need by delivering Station science via webinars, a newsletter, and a science round-up that are all part of a new science delivery platform called Rooted in Research.

Communicating USDA Forest Service science has never been more important. Northern Research Station (NRS) science addresses critical issues within the region, including invasive insects and diseases, fire, climate change, and the health and livability of urban areas. Raising the awareness of NRS science and research, integrating this research into forest management and planning at multiple scales, and building and strengthening collaborative scientist/manager partnerships across the region provides the opportunity to apply Station research in meaningful and compelling ways.

To support the delivery of NRS science, the Communications and Science Delivery team recently launch Rooted in Research, a multifaceted new communications platform focused on delivering synthesized science to natural resource managers and policy-makers. This new platform highlights emerging research relevant to natural resource managers with the intention of promoting strong science-management integration by making current research more available to busy resource managers.

In 2021, Rooted in Research held five webinars, released one science roundup, and distributed four science briefs. Rooted in Research demonstrates the Northern Research Station’s commitment to deliver the knowledge and tools land managers need to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of our Nation’s forests and grasslands for present and future generations.
