OREGON—Earlier this month, USDA Forest Service employees marked a solemn gathering as family, friends and colleagues came together to honor the memory of Casey Budlong, a revered wildland firefighter who dedicated nearly 25 years to the Forest Service. Budlong, who served on the La Grande Hotshots and recently worked at the La Grande Airtanker Base, passed away April 20 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

The memorial service was a poignant tribute to a man whose laughter and dedication profoundly impacted everyone he encountered. The Forest Service Honor Guard presented the colors in a moving ceremony.

Flags were flown at half-staff at Forest Service units across the Pacific Northwest Region on May 4 to coincide with the memorial service. This honor, approved by Forest Service Chief Randy Moore, underscored the profound respect and gratitude held for Budlong's contributions to the agency.

“Casey’s extraordinary bravery, unwavering dedication and profound kindness have left an indelible mark on our Forest Service and wildland firefighting communities," said Jacque Buchanan, regional forester for the Pacific Northwest Region. "His life and service exemplify the highest ideals of courage and selflessness."

Budlong, born Dec. 28, 1977, in Mill City, Oregon, was known for his love of the outdoors, including hunting, fishing and hiking. He was a family man, survived by his wife, Kathleen, and son, Christofer, whom he adored deeply.
