Forest Roads in Winter

Winter Rec Safety Document BacksideMany roads on national forest lands close seasonally for the winter and early spring. These temporarily closed roads are critical to help provide range land for deer, elk, and other wildlife. Winter is an especially stressful time for these animals.

Closed roads not only provide refuge for wildlife, they also protect road surfaces, and provide winter recreation opportunities such as snowmobiling & cross-country skiing.

Seasonally closed roads and trails are identified on the current Motor Vehicle Use Map.

Get a free Motor Vehicle Use Map from the forest you will be traveling on, listing all the seasonal road closures. Visitor maps and publications are available at forest offices and online via the Avenza map store.

Get to know the limitations of your vehicle, let someone know where you're going and when you'll be back, and read up on winter driving & safety.
