Dorena Genetic Resource Center (DGRC) is the USDA Forest Service's regional service center for genetics in the Pacific Northwest Region. Dorena houses disease resistance breeding programs for five-needled pines and Port-Orford-cedar, a native plant development program, and the National Tree Climbing Program.

Genetic Resource Management and Climate Change

Services:

• Development of disease resistance to exotic pathogens for native forest tree species. (see Program to Develop White Pine Blister Rust (Cronartium ribicola) Resistance and Program to Develop Phytophthora lateralis Resistance in Port-Orford-cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana)).
• Examine genetic variation of forest tree species native to Oregon and Washington.
• Regional seed storage for individual tree collections of conifer species.
• Technology transfer and tours to public and private groups.

Mailing Lists

To facilitate communication between people and groups on several topics we had set up moderated mailing lists/listservers (international/interdisciplinary in scope) for several topics:

• White Pine Blister Rust (Cronartium ribicola) - particularly related to disease resistance.
• Pest Resistance in Trees (Insect or pathogen resistance)
• Whitebark pine in the Pacific Northwest (status of the species, blister rust impacts, current activities)
• Whitebark pine (and other 'white' pines, particularly high elevation 5-needle pines susceptible to blister rust)
