Great American Outdoors Act

The U.S. Forest Service implementation of the Great American Outdoors Act, which permanently funds the Land and Water Conservation fund, and establishes the new Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund - which will enable federal land managers to take aggressive steps to address deferred maintenance and other infrastructure projects on national forests and grasslands through 2025.

Updates
In 2021, the Forest Service invested up to $40 million in GAOA funding for 29 projects to address critical deferred maintenance, improve transportation, and enhance recreation infrastructure on national forests in Washington and Oregon. An additional $62 million in GAOA funding has been invested for deferred maintenance projects for Fiscal Years 22 through FY24. Projects are submitted for funding consideration under the agency’s National Asset Management Program. These project proposals are evaluated for funding via the Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund and other funding authorities, including the Capital Improvement and Maintenance and Federal Land Transportation Program. The FY25 proposal window is open in the spring of this year.
