Wild and Scenic Rivers in California managed by the Forest Service

Free Flowing Rivers

The Wild and Scenic Rivers System preserves rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

What are wild and scenic rivers?

The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act protects more than 13,400 miles of rivers and streams in the U.S. and 2,000 miles in California. Designation as a wild and scenic river is our nation’s strongest form of protection for free-flowing rivers and streams. They have remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic or other similar values that led Congress to add these waterways to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.

It is not just government agencies that are responsible for protecting and managing our national wild & scenic rivers. Many of us get our drinking water from rivers, and many of the animals we like to see live there. You are every bit as critical.

Many agencies could use your help in protecting our nation's river treasures. If you have the time, please consider volunteering with your local agency on one of this state's great rivers.
