Preventing the Spread of Aquatic Invasive Species

The Flathead National Forest works to prevent Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) as an active partner with Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (MFWP).  MFWP operates numerous boat inspections at key locations across the State to prevent contaminated boats from entering Montana's water bodies.  The primary role of the Forest Service is to provide information, education, and early detection.  The Forest Service monitors lakes and reservoirs regularly using Environmental DNA (eDNA) as an early detection tool.  Species of greatest concern include zebra mussels, quagga mussels, and Eurasian watermilfoil.  Contamination of water bodies by these species can have drastic environmental and economic impacts.  Therefore, it is important that users understand how they can help prevent AIS contamination.  For more information, visit  http://cleandraindry.mt.gov/
