UPDATED Closure: Small Section of the Forest Still Closed due to Bobcat Fire

Alert

A small portion of the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains National Monument remains closed after the Bobcat Fire (2020) through October 1, 2024.

The purpose of the closure is to provide for public safety and to help the land recover naturally after the fire.

Major fires can be so hot that they burn out the root systems of plants, bushes, and trees, too. Until more plants (vegetation) can grow back, there isn't much to hold the soil in place. When combined with historic drought limiting plant growth and major storms in winter / spring 2023, this has caused landslides (debris flows), rockslides, and mudslides in the burned area. Until plants can grow back, the burned area is not stable enough to prevent major erosion.

In addition, within the burned area, forest trails have sustained significant damage and cannot be easily or quickly repaired.

It could take up to 3-5+ years for plants, including shrubs, to grow back after the Bobcat Fire.

The following is prohibited within the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains National Monument:

1. Going into or being on National Forest System lands within the Bobcat Fire Closure Area as described in Exhibit A and shown on Exhibit B. 36 C.F.R. § 261.52(e) in attached information.

2. Being on the following National Forest System Roads within the Bobcat Fire Closure Area as described in Exhibit A and shown on Exhibit B in attached information:

  • Forest Road No. 2N41
  • Forest Road No. 2N40

3. Being on any National Forest System trail within the Bobcat Fire Closure Area, including:

  • Gabrielino Trail
  • Sturtevant
  • Sturtevant Loop
  • Winter Creek
  • Zion Trail

This Forest Order is effective from June 14, 2024, through October 1, 2024. See attached information for Exhibit A/B and more details.
