Water Activities
The cool, clean lakes, rivers and streams of the Mendocino National Forest can be a welcome relief from the heat and sun of the California summer. Always use caution when enjoying the water. Never swim or float alone and always wear appropriate safety equipment (e.g., a life vest). Be aware of strong current, cold water, undertows or sudden water level changes. Keep children close at all times and enjoy!
Boating - Motorized
Motorized boating is allowed on the Sacramento River and at Lake Pillsbury only; boat ramps are available at both locations.
Annual boat launch pass $30; daily launch fee $6. Passes are available for purchase in advance via Recreation.gov or onsite at the boat ramp. The pass is only valid for accessing the Sacramento River from the Red Bluff Recreation Area. If purchasing in advance, please print your pass and place it on your vehicle's dashboard. If purchasing at the boat ramp using scan and pay, please ensure you have the Recreation.gov mobile app downloaded before arrival for ease of purchase. The app is available for Android or iPhone. Scan and Pay functionality at the boat ramp is only available for a single day pass. Annual boat ramp passes may be purchased by mail-in form. You must download and mail the form to Mendocino National Forest, 825 N. Humboldt Ave., Willows, CA 95988. Please allow two weeks for processing mail-in forms.
Boating - Non-Motorized
Non-motorized boating is permitted on some lakes. Boating on any river is non-motorized due to the shallow depth. For specifics, check information for the desired recreation area.
Swimming
Water safety should be the most important factor if you decide to take a swim in a river, lake or stream. Currents, water temperature, flow rates, and bottom topography change every season of the year. A favorite quiet pool from the late summer could be a death trap in early spring. Check all conditions before entering the water. Never dive head first anywhere. Wear suitable safety equipment and keep children close at all times.
