Historic structures can be found scattered throughout the Black Hills, many of which are still active, including five Fire Lookout Towers. Please keep in mind that archaeological or historical sites and artifacts on public land are protected under law.

Fire Lookout Towers

Gold Mountain Mine

Historic Cabins

Meeker Ranch

Homesteaders built many cabins throughout the Forest and some remain standing today.

Historic Work Centers

The Forest Service and volunteers are working to preserve many historical work centers on the Forest.

Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower

The famous Deadwood Sheriff, Seth Bullock, built the Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower in 1919 as a dedication to President Theodore Roosevelt, his close friend of many years.
