Sundance, WY, Aug. 1, 2025 – Free personal use firewood permits for the area in and around the Blacktail Trailhead are available at the Bearlodge Ranger District office now through December 15th, 2025. This area was impacted by a tornado in August 2024. Some clean-up has already occurred through a salvage timber sale but opportunities for firewood still exist.

To obtain your free personal use firewood permit, visit the Bearlodge Ranger District office at 101 S 21st Street, Sundance, WY Monday and Friday 8:00 AM-4:30 PM, Tues. Wed. Thurs. 9:00 AM-4:30 PM, to receive a permit and map of the location area that shows the Free Use area and open roads.

Free permits are only valid in designated areas marked on maps. Please obey the map guidelines.

You must have your permit with you to legally obtain firewood. Although the free personal use firewood permit is good through December 15th, 2025, limited amounts of material are available.

Annual firewood permits are also available for purchase. The permits purchased are valid from January 1 through December 31. Purchased permits are valid across the forest.
