North Umpqua Trail #1414.09 Dread & Terror Segment
Area Status: Open
This 13-mile trail is anything but dreadful and terrible! In 1908, two rangers on horseback named a four-mile ridgeline south of the river as "Dread and Terror" in reference to the disagreeable possibility of fighting forest fires in the impenetrable thickets of whitethorn brush blanketing the area. This is one of the most beautiful segments of the North Umpqua Trail with many forms of flowing water.
Just east of the Umpqua Hot Springs, you'll discover Surprise and Columnar Falls, both columnar waterfalls. Several miles farther you'll find Lemolo Falls, a wonderful 102-foot "horsetail-type" falls.
