North Umpqua Trail #1414.07 Deer Leap Segment
Named after a volcanic plug that rises 1500-feet above the river, this trail segment follows high along the canyon rim. At the western end, you'll pass by the Soda Springs Dam and Reservoir, then cross Medicine and Slide creeks. Look for a great view from an open bluff 500 feet above the North Umpqua River.
A couple side trips will take you to see Medicine Creek Indian Pictographs, and Toketee Falls.
- A trail to the Medicine Creek Indian Pictographs is located 1 mile away on Forest Road 4775. The 0.2 mile trail leads to a rock with old paintings. Please respect this cultural heritage site.
- Another nearby trail leads to Toketee Falls, which is a double-tiered waterfall plunging 80 and 40 feet over a sheer wall of columnar basalt to an emerald pool below.

Western Trailhead:
- To reach the Soda Springs Trailhead, continue on OR-138 to milepost 55 where you should turn north onto Forest Road 4775. Immediately turn left onto Forest Road 4775-011. The trailhead is at milepost 1.3, between Soda Springs Dam and Soda Springs Power House. The actual trail is accessed from parking area by following Forest Road 4775-011, 1.2 miles west, past the power house. Parking and trailhead location are separated by a primitive road.
Eastern Trailhead:
- To reach the Toketee Lake Trailhead, continue on OR-138 to milepost 58.6. Turn north on to Forest Road 34. Go 2 miles north on Forest Road 34. The trailhead is next to the Toketee Lake Campground. Parking available for up to eight vehicles and up to five horse trailers.
